What will you get when crossing a Corgi and Poodle? You get an adorable CorgiPoo! It’s a small and popular breed with plenty of energy and a unique temperament you’ll adore.
But before you get a Corgi Poodle Mix, let’s take a look at what you should know about it.
What is a Corgi Poodle Mix?
The Corgi Poodle Mix is an excellent companion dog originating from the United States in the 1980s when crossing Poodles with different breeds was all the rage.
Usually, breeders would cross the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Miniature Poodle as it was much easier mixing dogs of a similar size. However, one can also breed the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Standard or Toy Poodle.
Since the Corgi Poodle Mix isn’t a purebred dog, the American Kennel Club does not recognize it, so it has no breed standard. That said, the following registries recognize this as a breed:
- Dog Registry of America
- International Canine Association, Inc.
- American Canine Hybrid Club
- Designer Breed Registry
- International Designer Canine Registry
Corgi Poodle Mix Appearance
The Corgi Poodle Mix may inherit either of his parent’s genes, so it’s hard to tell what exactly one will look like when fully grown.
Your Corgi Poodle Mix may have the Poodle’s curly hair or the Corgi’s straight hair. He may also have only one layer of coat like the Poodle or two like the Corgi.
The coat color varies and will depend on the parents, with puppies getting a combination of their colors and markings. We can find CorgiPoos in black, white, cream, brown, red, gray, or even a mix of these coat colors.
Most CorgiPoos will have the body structure of the Corgi, with its short legs and long body. However, poodle mixed breeds can also take on the parent genes to have longer limbs.
Usually, CorgiPoos would have circular heads and fox-like muzzles, with rounded ears. Their lcute little poodle ears can either be erect like Corgis or floppy like Poodles. Furthermore, they have a black nose and almond-shaped eyes.
Generally, adult CorgiPoos are 10-20 inches tall, weighing between 12-40 pounds. However, the individual poodle’s size can change based on the Poodle parent.
Regardless of the size, the mixed breed is excellent for apartment living, provided that they receive the right amount of training and daily exercise.
CorgiPoo Health
CorgiPoos may inherit genetic diseases from their parents, but as long as they have a proper diet and regular exercise, they can live for 12-14 years. Here are the health issues a Corgi Poodle Mix may inherit:
- Achondroplasia Dwarfism
- Canine Degenerative Myelopathy
- Von Willebrand Disease
- Addison’s disease
- Canine Epilepsy
- Hip dysplasia
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy
- Legg-Calve Perthes Disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Hypothyroidism
- Eye health problems like glaucoma or cataracts
- Patellar luxation
- Spinal cord disorder
- Blood disorders
Because of this, you must take them to the veterinarian for routine check-ups, vaccinations, and health tests to diagnose and prevent severe health conditions.
CorgiPoo Temperament
Because the Poodle and Corgi are affectionate and intelligent breeds, CorgiPoos will inherit their parent breeds’ temperaments. Furthermore, their parents make excellent family pets, so expect this hybrid breed to be the same. They are delightful and outgoing, enjoying the company of others.
CorgiPoos are also very playful and lively, getting along with children and other animals. They also love being the center of attention and want to play all the time!
Because of that, CorgiPoos are also mischievous, but as long as you train them well, you won’t have trouble with destructive behaviors. Also, they don’t like being alone and tend to suffer from separation anxiety, so make sure you spend more quality time with your Corgi Poodle Mix and include him in all family activities.
Since CorgiPoos are very friendly, they’ll welcome your guests and other visitors. But the breed is also loyal and alert, so they’ll bark when seeing a threat or feeling suspicious.
Grooming Requirements
CorgiPoos have moderate to low shedding levels, depending on the coat they inherit from their parents. If your Corgi Poodle Mix inherits their Poodle parent’s curly coat, he will most likely have a non-shedding and hypoallergenic coat. If he inherits the Corgi’s straight coat, he will shed a bit and may trigger allergies.
But even then, CorgiPoos, who inherit the Corgi’s coat, will shed far less than expected since he has Poodle genes.
Regardless of their coat, they must have daily brushing with a slicker brush to stay free from matting and tangles. They will also need a bath and trim every 4-6 weeks, and their teeth brushed every two weeks to prevent dental diseases.
Training and Exercise Requirements
These balls of fluff have high energy levels, requiring an hour of exercise daily. You can spread their physical activity out throughout your day, going for a walk in the morning then playing outdoors in the evening.
You can take them out for a quick jog, walks, or even indoor games for mental stimulation with their energy levels.
Fortunately, Corgis and Poodles are brilliant dogs, so that CorgiPoos will be just as intelligent. That makes the crossbreed easier to train than their stubborn Corgi parent, as a CorgiPoo is most likely inheriting the Poodle’s eagerness to please.
As long as you provide consistent training sessions with positive reinforcement, your puppy will learn quicker. However, we recommend that you make lessens short yet fun, as CorgiPoos are easily distracted.
That said, proper training is a must to keep them well-behaved and socialized. CorgiPoos will also appreciate the training sessions as it gives them mental stimulation.
Here are some fun facts about their purebred parents:
