The TerriPoo is a mix between the Terrier and Poodle. This designer breed is slowly becoming more popular across the USA, having the best characteristics from both parent dogs.
You may have already heard about the other Terrier Poodle Mixes, such as the Yorkipoo, WestiePoo, and JackaPoo. But what are Terrier Poodle Mixes, and what are they like? Please read our guide!
Terrier Poodle Mix Parent Breeds
Terrier Poodle mix is a dog breed with one Poodle parent and the other from the Terrier group. There are different kinds of TerriPoos based on the parent Terrier breed.
Before delving deeper into Terripoos, let’s look at their parent breeds.
Terriers originated in England, Ireland, and Scotland. The name terrier derives from the Latin word “terra,” which translates to earth or soil. As the name suggests, people initially bred Terriers to hunt small, unwanted animals in farms and fields by digging ground or squeezing into tunnels of burrowing animals.
Terriers grow from small to medium-sized, mostly weighing less than 25 pounds. The Terrier’s compact build helps it fit into small tunnels to limit the places its prey hides in. Expect Terriers to be active, intelligent, independent, friendly, and playful. These dogs are born hunters and diggers with the energy for work and play.
Poodles originated in Germany, bred as waterfowl retrievers for hunters. The breed became popular in France as hunters and lapdogs and is now one of the most popular breeds worldwide.

As for their size, it depends on both the Terrier and Poodle parents. On average, TerriPoos stand at 9-15 inches tall, weighing between 10-14 pounds.
Larger terriers can grow taller than 15 inches and weigh between 20-45 pounds if breeders pair a large Terrier and Standard Poodle.
The Terrier Poodle Mix Coat
Most TerriPoos don’t shed as much, which they probably get from the Poodle’s low-shedding coat. That said, TerriPoos may get the Terrier parent’s coat, which isn’t as hypoallergenic as the Poodle’s. We recommend taking time to be with the dog to observe if you suffer from any allergies because of it.
Even if TerriPoos don’t shed a lot, other things can trigger your allergies, such as the dog’s saliva or dander.
Expect the TerriPoo’s coat to be thick, coarse, and shaggy like the Terrier or short and curly like the Poodle. These dogs can come in different poodle coat colors, such as:
- Red
- White
- Brown
- Cream
- Tan
- Blue
Terrier Poodle Mix Temperament
The Terrier Poodle mix is an intelligent, independent, and fearless dog. They have plenty of energy coming from both parents, so expect them to need daily exercise to prevent destructive behaviors.
Given their high activity level, these dogs are always up for games. However, TerriPoo’s dominance and stubbornness sometimes show, mainly left untrained. Because of that, TerriPoos aren’t the best dogs for first-time dog owners. However, these excellent family dogs go well with older and experienced pet owners.
Furthermore, TerriPoos take on the Terrier’s mischief and Poodle’s playful personality. Expect a lot of fun antics and a wonderful playmate for older children, making TerriPoos excellent family dogs.
Push aside their stubbornness, and you still get a social and wonderful family pet. Even if TerriPoos are independent, they crave attention and love being part of everything the family does.
Once you get all the TerriPoo’s energy out from regular exercise, he will want to recharge and cuddle with family for the rest of the day. You get the best of both worlds with this active breed.
Terrier Poodle Mix Health Issues
Fortunately, TerriPoos are generally healthy dogs. They have a long lifespan between 10-18 years, given their small size.
However, TerriPoos are still at risk of certain genetic health defects from their parent breeds. Watch out for these common health conditions:
- Addison’s Disease
- Diabetes
- Mitral Valve Disease
- Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease
- Eye disorders like Lens Luxation and Cataracts
- Skin Disorders
- Hip Dysplasia
- Bloat
It’s impossible to avoid some of these health concerns due to genetics. However, you can optimize TerriPoo’s health through a healthy diet, exercise, and regular vet check-ups. Genetic testing and updated vaccinations are also a must, so veterinarians can prevent and treat diseases, preparing ahead if your dog is at risk.
Terrier Poodle Mix Training and Exercise Requirements
TerriPoos, like its parent breeds, require daily exercise and a lot of it. These dogs require 45-60 minutes of exercise every day, as they have plenty of energy they need to expend.
TerriPoo will likely have aggression issues from boredom and frustration if left alone and without adequate exercise. That’s why TerriPoos are excellent family pets for those who are always out on adventures and want to bring their dog every time.
You can take your TerriPoo for walks, jogs, hikes swims, and even play games like fetch for their mental stimulation. You can exercise your dog indoors or outdoors, provided you have enough space. When you’re out, do leave toys for your TerriPoo to play with, so he doesn’t take his energy out on the couch!
Potential pet owners will need to set aside time to give their dogs proper training. 10-15 minutes of obedience training daily is enough, compared to long sessions a couple of times monthly.
When training your dog, use positive reinforcement at all times. TerriPoos, like other dog breeds, don’t do well with screaming, physical abuse, or punishments. Negative reinforcements can bring aggressive behaviors out in your dog. Instead, be stern but don’t instill fear. Reward your dog with verbal praises and treats when he does something correctly during his training sessions.
Terrier Poodle Mix Food & Diet Requirements
When creating the ideal TerriPoo diet, you must choose dog food for small breeds with high energy levels. You can ask the veterinarian about food intake recommendations and what types of dog food to purchase.
There are various dog food options to choose from, and your TerriPoo’s diet would change as he grows up. The food you choose will depend on his size, energy, and health. But in general, it’s best to choose a high-protein diet with the right vitamins and minerals, free from any additives or fillers.
We recommend dividing your dog’s food intake into 2-3 meals daily rather than free-feeding. Doing that prevents overeating and unnecessary weight gain. Also, avoid feeding your TerriPoo too many treats and never give it human food from the table, despite the puppy eyes!
Since TerriPoos are at high risk of bloat, keep its daily exercise at least 60 minutes apart from feeding times, before and after.
Terrier Poodle Mix Regular Grooming Requirements
Keep in mind that TerriPoos require frequent grooming. Most TerriPoos will have long, thick, and even curly coats. Because of that, you’ll need to give the TerriPoo’s curly coat daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats.
We don’t recommend that first-time dog owners give their dogs a haircut themselves. You can take your TerriPoo to a professional groomer for a full bath and clipping every 4-6 weeks. You can choose among different haircuts that suit your dog’s style and overall weather!
You’ll also need to take care of other frequent grooming requirements, such as:
- Clip your dog’s nails regularly once you notice that his nails start to make sounds against the surface.
- Inspect your dog’s eyes and ears for signs of infections or tear stains. Clean these sensitive areas once a week.
- Brush your PomaPoo’s teeth every 2-3 days to prevent dental issues.
How Much is a Terrier Poodle Mix?
You can purchase from reputable breeders if you want to get a TerriPoo. However, note that they come at high prices! Expect to pay about $3,000 for a TerriPoo from quality breeders.
The prices from quality breeders depend on the location, demand, parent breeds, and other factors. It does not include the expenses you’ll make caring for your dogs, such as veterinary costs, pet supplies, food, and the like.
Never purchase from backyard breeders or puppy mills. These backyard breeders sell Doodle Terrier puppies at low prices (lower than $2,500) but raise their animals in poor conditions, making them at risk of health issues.
When purchasing from a quality breeder, ask about the parents’ genetic testing and health clearances, along with vaccination records. A reputable breeder will be happy to assist and provide any necessary documentation.
You can also opt to rescue stray pups at a local shelter. Your community’s animal shelter may have TerriPoos up for adoption. These rescue dogs may be older, but they are worth saving.
Furthermore, adoption comes at a lower price, though interview and screening processes exist. You can search online to find different information on where to find TerriPoos for adoption around your area.
