Three California rescues place Poodles and Poodle mixes, and each covers a different part of the state. NorCal Poodle Rescue takes all three Poodle sizes from Fresno to the Oregon border. The Standard Poodle Club and Rescue of the Desert rehomes Standard Poodles in the Coachella Valley. California Doodle Rescue places Poodle mixes through foster homes based in Southern California. Each listing below was checked on the organization’s own website in October 2026.

California Poodle rescue organizations
NorCal Poodle Rescue
Northern California: Fresno to the Oregon border
- Since: 1985, founded by Standard Poodle breeder Patty Moulthrop (history)
- Type: all-volunteer nonprofit; most dogs are cared for in the rescue’s own kennel runs, with foster homes for dogs that need longer care
- Breeds: Standard, Miniature and Toy Poodles and Poodle mixes
- Scale: more than 140 dogs placed a year and about 3,000 since it began
- Mission, in its own words: “We rescue, rehabilitate and find loving homes” for Poodles and Poodle mixes (about NCPR)
- Contact: one adoption interest form on its site covers every dog
Every dog is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and groomed before adoption. NorCal publishes its full fee schedule: $350 for Toys, Miniatures and small mixes, $500 for large mixes, and $700 for a Standard that has had a preventive gastropexy (bloat surgery). Dogs over 10 are $250, and its “Senior for Senior” fee is $100 when both the dog is 10 or older and the adopter is 65 or older. Read our full guide to NorCal Poodle Rescue.
Standard Poodle Club and Rescue of the Desert and Greater Palm Springs
Coachella Valley: Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Indio
- Since: 2003, when two friends who walked their Standard Poodles on El Paseo started the club
- Type: 501(c)(3) nonprofit, as stated on its site
- Breeds: Standard Poodles
- Mission, in its own words: to run a social club for members and their Standard Poodles and “to support the rescue and re-homing of surrendered or abandoned Standard Poodles” (home page)
- Contact: (760) 424-8343, or the contact form
Adopters start with a single adoption interest form, and a volunteer follows up after reviewing it. The club also holds Standard Poodle “Promenade” walks on El Paseo in Palm Desert, listed on its events page, which are a good way to meet the breed before you apply.
California Doodle Rescue
Southern California base; foster homes, no shelter building
- Type: 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 88-0967716, as stated on its site
- Breeds: Poodle mixes (Goldendoodles, Labradoodles and other Doodles)
- Mission, in its own words: “to rescue, foster, and find safe loving homes for poodle mixed” breed dogs (home page)
- Contact: apply online through its adoption page
Fees run from $350 to $1,500 depending on the dog’s age and health, and each dog’s fee is on its listing. Most of its dogs need a fully fenced yard, every adopter must pick up the dog in person, and it does not place dogs as gifts or as future service dogs. Applications stay on file for six months.
Where to look by region
Northern California and the Bay Area
NorCal Poodle Rescue is the breed rescue for the whole region and only adopts to homes between Fresno and the Oregon border. Its biggest yearly fundraiser is Poodle Day in Carmel-by-the-Sea, which names NorCal as its sole beneficiary.
Palm Springs and the desert
For a Standard Poodle in Riverside County’s low desert, start with the Standard Poodle Club and Rescue of the Desert. It focuses on Standards only.
Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego
California Doodle Rescue is the Southern California option for Poodle mixes. For a purebred Poodle in San Diego County, the San Diego Poodle Club lists rescue services for homeless Poodles on its Poodle Club of America club profile; its own website was not loading when we checked.
How adoption works at these rescues
All three rescues start with one online application rather than first-come reservations. NorCal reviews how many hours a dog will be alone, how active the household is and the adopter’s experience, then calls promising matches for a phone interview. California Doodle Rescue adds reference and veterinarian checks and requires the whole household, including other pets, to meet the dog. NorCal is the only one of the three that publishes a trial: it refunds the fee if you return the dog within two weeks. After that, its promise stands for life: “If at any time or for any reason you are not able to care for the Poodle, please call us and we will take the Poodle back.” NorCal’s fee includes spay or neuter, vaccines, a microchip and grooming; California Doodle Rescue says its fees go toward veterinary care.
Not sure which size suits you? Compare Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles, read about Doodle rescue, or find rescues in other states on our Poodle rescue hub and in the full rescue directory.
Fees, service areas and policies on this page come from each rescue’s own website, checked on October 20, 2026. Rescues update fees and rules, so their site is the final word on the day you apply.
